My Slashy Valentine 2017 Rules & FAQ

Critical Dates:

  • Sign-up period: December 4th - December 18th

  • Assignments to be distributed by December 28th

  • Deadline for first-time participants: February 1st

  • Deadline for returning participants: February 8th

  • Archive opens: February 14th, 2017

By popular demand, we will reveal to you the name of your recipient at your request. Some people find it easier to write or to personalize a story if they know the identity of their recipient.  Other people find that thought absolutely horrifying! Now, you can have it either way. If, at any time during the writing period, you wish to know the identity of your recipient, you may ask us.  Since other writers do not want to be "spoiled," we ask that you please keep this information to yourself!

  • All stories must be a minimum length of 1,200 words. Stories must be complete and in their entirety.

  • Submissions must be new, complete, and previously unreleased, and written specifically for the assignment you receive.

  • If you have defaulted on ANY previous Slashy Santa-sponsored exchanges, you will NOT be permitted to participate in this round. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this rule. This may be a disappointment to some of you, but it is far more disappointing for a hard-working participant who strove to meet the deadline to discover they did not receive a story because their writer dropped out.

  • Manners are mandatory!! Be kind to your readers, be kind to your writer, be kind to your overworked admin. Just as you are required to turn in a finished, beta'd story, you are required to acknowledge the person who wrote for you in a timely fashion. If you're going to be out of town when the archive opens, consider making an LJ post to that effect, or alerting the moderator if you think it's going to be more than 3 or 4 days before you can get in touch with your writer. Even if you *hate* the story you are given-- and we certainly hope that's not the case!--common courtesy dictates that you should at least say "Thank you for writing this for me." If you cannot gracefully thank the author who wrote for you, you may be asked to sit out the next round and contemplate the meaning of the word "Courtesy."

  • Stories shall not be released to the general fandom on any group, list, or website until they are released on the SlashySwap collection. After the publication, feel free to post or archive your work anywhere you would like.

  • Authors are responsible for posting their own stories on or before the due date at the Slashy Swap collection at AO3. If you have any questions, difficulties or need an AO3 invitation, please email the moderator: slashysanta@gmail.com

[Mod's note: please forgive the delay and awkward timing of this year's exchange. I was out of the country in May/June and will be out of the country and offline for a chunk of August, so I have opted for a later exchange rather than a largely foreshortened writing window for participants!]

PROHIBITIONS / RESTRICTIONS

  • No fiction involving a minor in a sexual situation, even in flashback, no matter how vaguely alluded to, will be permitted. Period.

  • No songfics.

  • No het pairings as anything other than secondary characters or plots.

  • No bestiality. (Tolkien characters that manifest as cognizant beings are fine. If in doubt, ask us.)

  • No RPS (real person slash) will be accepted.

  • No blatant Mary Sue, Marty Stu, or self-inserts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can I ask for femslash?

Yes! We had our first femslash stories during the 2013 My Slashy Valentine swap, and we'd love to have you join us.

Q: I see a main focus on Elves, Men, Valar and Maiar. What about Dwarves and Hobbits?

A: In previous swaps there was less emphasis on Dwarves and Hobbits, but due to the release of the Hobbit movies, that's starting to change. We're happy to try and accommodate any request, though it is dependent on having writers able to fill these requests. You can help this process by spreading the word to your fellow Dwarf and Hobbit writers.

Q: I just received my assignment and it fits perfectly into part of a series I've been working on. Can I use it anyway?

A: We'd prefer your story to be original and created solely for your recipient, but so long as your submission fits the assignment you received, can be read and understood as a standalone, and it's new and unreleased, then go ahead.

Q: Yikes! I've been working on my story, but there was a family emergency and I don't think I'll make the deadline. What should I do?

A: Let us know! The Slashy Swap team have families too and understand that emergencies sometimes happen. The sooner you tell us, the easier it will be for us to come to a mutually agreeable solution.

Q: Unfortunately, the emergency has turned into something longer term and I won't be able to finish my story after all.

A: Again, please let us know as soon as possible so we can find a replacement to finish your assignment.

Q: I signed up for the previous exchanges, but never turned anything in. Can I still participate?

A: No. It simply isn't fair to those who met their obligations, or to the person who didn't get a story.

Q: Do I need to have my work beta read? I don't have one!

A: While we will not strictly enforce the use of a beta, we strongly encourage it. At the very least, please proof read and run a spell and grammar check. If you need help finding a beta, let us know and we'll direct you to some beta resources. Remember, you're writing a gift for someone, so make your story as perfect as it can be.

Q: HELP! I received the worst assignment in the world! What were you thinking? I can't write this!

A: It was likely an oversight. Please contact us and we will do what we can to find another assignment that is more to your taste and ability. If you already confirmed you would accept it, we can't make promises, but we'll do the best we can to help.

NOTE: In some rare instances, it may not be possible for a request to be filled to the requestor's exact specifications. This may occur if no author is willing to write the elements in the request (some examples are BDSM, fetish, rape, MPREG, or character death). In this case, the participant will be asked to revise their request so that we'll be able to match it.

Q: What if I'm not comfortable reading or writing steamy scenes? Can I write or request Gen-fic?

A: Not everyone wants to write (or read) something hot and heavy-- and that's OK! We allow you to specify any rating you're comfortable with both for reading and writing, even if that's only a "G"! We do our best to match up readers and writers who share the same...er...temperature tolerance. Please note that because this is a slash-focused exchange, we ask that you at least be comfortable with the existence of same-sex pairings, even if you're not writing anything explicit.

It has come to my attention that people are jumping to conclusions that they have been defaulted on because they don't yet see a gift notice in their AO3 account.

PEOPLE.  This is the equivalent of feeling disappointment when you don't see a brand new bike under the Christmas tree for you when Christmas is still a week away.  Conjecture and assumption causes unnecessary stress and makes your moderator panic. Currently, there are several writers on extension, and many more have not yet added their recipient's name on the upload form. I gave people the option of learning their recipient's name during the writing period, once they were ready to upload their story, or after all the stories are revealed-- and some people really don't want to know who they're writing for until the archive opens. Many people *still* won't have gift notices on AO3 when the archive opens because the writers are waiting until after the reveal to add them.

The master fic list, which will be posted here and emailed to all participants, will list ALL the stories received and their recipients, even if the giftee's name isn't yet in AO3.

Stop shaking the boxes under the tree.  Be patient. Christmas is coming, but it's not here yet.

Hi all:

I know some of you have had issues editing (or even seeing) your stories once they've gone into the moderation queue.  Apparently this is a known issue:

Hi there,
Thank you for contacting us. I’m afraid that we have a known bug in which works in a moderated anonymous and/or unrevealed collection don’t show up to their creators on the Collected Works page until they are approved by the moderator.

I'm afraid that the best work-arounds I can suggest would be to either give the users the direct URLs to their works or to make the collection unmoderated and just go through and reject any unwanted works before the reveal.

Only the creator of a work can edit the gift recipient information on it.  As a Gift Exchange moderator you would be able to make changes to the _assigned_ recipient if you were using the Archive's matching system, but even in that case you wouldn't be able to override the information on a work once it was posted.

We're sorry for the difficulties!  If you have any questions or run into more problems, please let us know.
Best,
Lady Oscar
AO3 Support

Soooooo..TL;DR version: If you need to edit your story, contact me ASAP (and CC the message to kenazfiction@gmail.com) and I will send you the direct link to your story which, hopefully, you will then be able to edit.  If you still can't edit it, let me know and I will "reject" your submission, and you can upload the edited version.

I will also need all of you who have *NOT* requested your recipient's name in advance to go back in and add your giftee's name once the stories have been revealed... WHICH IS ON AUGUST 3RD! THAT'S SOON, PEOPLE! :D

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thank you very much for bearing with us as we continue to learn the ins and outs of this platform!
[identity profile] kenazfiction.livejournal.com
Please check your email and confirm acceptance of your assignment. Please let me know ASAP if there are any problems!

**Please note that the due date for all returning AinA participants is JULY 27. This is listed on the various websites, LJ, and your original signup confirmation, but I screwed up when updating the form response for some of your assignments.**
Apologies for any confusion this has caused!
Happy writing,

SinS error

Sep. 2nd, 2013 12:51 pm
[identity profile] red-lasbelin.livejournal.com
Due to an error that crept in on the SinS master spreadsheet, I sent out the wrong story request to the wonderful SinS pitch-hitters. Samtyr wrote for Aearwen (instead of Chloe Amethyst as I had labeled on the spreadsheet), and so Aearwen ended up with four stories for her request and Chloe with none.

[livejournal.com profile] elladansgirl [livejournal.com profile] koulagirl666 rescued me and wrote incredibly last minute pitch-hits for Chloe (Jade's A Risk Worth Taking and kalypsobean's to the shoreline and beyond.) I can't thank them enough.

My heartfelt apologies to [livejournal.com profile] chloe_amethyst, [livejournal.com profile] larienelengasse, [livejournal.com profile] elladansgirl and [livejournal.com profile] lanyon, who were affected by my mistake. I will be extra vigilant to make sure this doesn't happen again.

[identity profile] kenazfiction.livejournal.com

Greetings, Slashy Swappers!

It's (almost) that time of year again!  In anticipation of our next round of swap sign-ups, I'd like to make some important administrative announcements:

- This year's "Summer" exchange will be Sultry in September rather than Ardor in August. Actual dates will be announced shortly, but anticipate a later-than-usual timeframe.

- Due to a confluence of personal, professional, and travel-related issues, Red has graciously agreed to take over the Summer swap for me. I'm pretty much either out of town or out of commission throughout August, and I am concerned that I will not be able to deal with administrative issues as swiftly as the exchange demands, and I'd prefer to sit out a round than to have chaos ensue. Of course, Red also has MAJOR travel plans this summer, so she will be burning the proverbial candle at both ends. I hope to provide back-up assistance as necessary. Please be patient with us if we cannot respond immediately to your emails!

- Sultry in September will mark the beginning of a migration to An Archive of Our Own (Ao3) as the home base for the Slashy Swaps. Moving to Ao3 means guaranteed permanence for our stories, no matter who is running the swaps down the line. We won't have issues with vanishing websites, server downtime, technical support, hosting costs, or any of the glitches we've experienced with the old Geocities or standalone eFiction-based websites. The eFiction software is no longer being updated on any regular basis, the tech support forums are a ghost town, and neither Red nor I have the tech skills (or patience, frankly) to troubleshoot some of the back-end issues (disappearing comments, formatting snafus, spam comment floods, etc.) that have been plaguing our current site.

- I have NO PLANS to take down the current slashysanta site! But I do want to be prepared for any future eventualities, including loss of hosting space, catastrophic data loss or corruption, obsolescence or increasing bugginess of the eFiction software, change of swap management, or any other unforeseen circumstances.

- If you currently have an Ao3 account and wish to add any of your previous years' stories to the Slashy Santa collections, by all means have at it!  The collection homepage is here, and all the individual exchanges (subcollections, in the parlance of Ao3) are listed here.  They are all unlocked and unmoderated, so you may post or import your stories freely without any administrative intervention. Let me know if you run into any trouble.

- If you do not have an Ao3 account, but would like one, your should request one as soon as possible!  There is currently a bit of a wait.

- YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE WITHOUT AN  Ao3 ACCOUNT. If you don't have one and either don't want one or don't get your invite code before September (I can't imagine the wait is *that* long!) you will be able to email us your story and we can post it using the Slashysanta administrative account. We don't want the change of venue to be a barrier to entry for anyone.

- As far as I know, we will be using our USUAL sign-up methods, rather than the Ao3 sign-up form... unless Red is feeling really brave!  She will let you all know when she posts the dates.

- I understand that not everyone will be 100% thrilled with a move. Some people feel that Ao3 is big and impersonal and scary. I can't say that I agree; it's only as big and impersonal as you want it to be. Having our little collection of exchanges there is no different than having our little collection of exchanges on its own site-- you needn't venture any farther afield than the Slashy Santa main collection page if you don't wish to. It does, however, guarantee a degree of stability, permanence, and technical reliability that the eFiction site no longer can. Who knows-- it could also mean an increased readership and an influx of new participants for future exchanges! I hope you all will see this as an adventure in moving forward, and a commitment to the longevity (almost a decade now!) of this swap... the heart and soul will remain the same, only the URL will change.

- Obviously, after the Big Day, you can and should post your stories wherever you wish!

Ok. that's it for now-- please let me know if you  have any questions!

-Kenaz

For the newcomers, there will be a Master Post of all the Slashy Valentine stories, but you will also receive a personal link via email to your special gift fic.
