The Encyclopedia of Arda saved my butt on this one, as well as LotR: Appendix A part v. Anything that confuses you, look there. Mithril is also called 'truesilver', and therefore I have used mercury, also known as 'quicksilver', as a liquid and possibly weaker variant. I definitely don't recommend ingesting it, though it was prescribed as a medication as recently as the early twentieth century.
